Ryzen 9950X3D Overclocking - Additional Notes

Build and Methodology

Measurement:

Benchmarking and stability:

Phase -1: All Default

I was resetting the CMOS when I realized I may as well try benchmarking a fully-default BIOS.

NOTE: I rushed some of the benchmarks for this phase. It’s largely unimportant anyway.

Phase 0: Enable XMP

I only enable the XMP profile.

I’ve had a full week of running my system like this, and it has been fully stable the whole time. I’ve run overnight 100% CPU workloads with this.

Phase 0 forms our base case where just the absolute bare minimum settings have been applied.

I did not bother with synthetic stress testing. This is probably fine.

Other notes

I actually tried setting DRAM Performance Mode to “Aggressive”, but I got a crash during a 50% CPU load. I haven’t tested it since. Maybe I should give it another try after I finish CPU overclocking?

Results

This is the only phase where I have UserBenchmark scores. I can’t be bothered trying to get past the “Server Full” dialogue box to run the benchmark for the other phases. Link

Phase 1.1: Enable Precision Boost Overdrive 2

Here, we just rely on the motherboard’s pre-programmed PBO2 parameters.

All BIOS menu items changed from default

All resulting BIOS value changes

When changing from Phase 0:

Precision Boost Overdrive: [Auto]->[Enabled]

Phase 1.2: PBO Advanced mode

TODO. I suspect it’s similar performance to Phase 0.

Phase 1.3: PBO Advanced mode, all default except PBO Limits = Motherboard

All BIOS menu items changed from default

Phase A2.1: Fmax +200 MHz

All BIOS menu items changed from default

All resulting BIOS value changes

When changing from Phase 0:

Precision Boost Overdrive: [Auto]->[Advanced]
CPU Boost Clock Override: [Disabled]->[Enabled (Positive)]
Max CPU Boost Clock Override(+): [25]->[200]

Result

OCCT stress test “Extreme Steady SSE” looks identical to Phase 0 after 5 minutes. I ended testing ot Phase A2.1 early. I might revisit this later.

Phase A2.2: Fmax +200 MHz, Curve Optimizer -20 -20

All BIOS menu items changed from default

All resulting BIOS value changes

When changing from Phase A2.1:

Curve Optimizer: [Disable]->[Per CCD]
CCD 0 Curve Optimizer Magnitude: [0]->[20]
CCD 1 Curve Optimizer Magnitude: [0]->[20]

Result

Windows blue-screened in the 7-zip benchmark.

Windows blue-screened again while simply idling.

Idle results:

27.5 C
27.2 C
31.0 C
31.2 C

33.597 W
 1.051 V
 1.065 V
   179 W

I’m disappointed. I’ve been led to believe that most people should be able to achieve this.

Phase A2.3: Fmax +200 MHz, Curve Optimizer -15 -15

All BIOS menu items changed from default

All resulting BIOS value changes

When changing from Phase 0:

Precision Boost Overdrive: [Auto]->[Advanced]
CPU Boost Clock Override: [Disabled]->[Enabled (Positive)]
Max CPU Boost Clock Override(+): [25]->[200]
Curve Optimizer: [Disable]->[Per CCD]
CCD 0 Curve Optimizer Magnitude: [0]->[15]
CCD 1 Curve Optimizer Magnitude: [0]->[15]

Result

Geekbench threw an error the first time around. I rebooted and continued the test suite again. We got through the rest of the tests without a problem. Probably a minor hiccup unrelated to the overclocking?

Phase B2.1: PBO Limits = Motherboard, Fmax +200 MHz, Curve Optimizer -15

All BIOS menu items changed from default
